Entertainment, Pornography, and Representation

undressingPornography is a multi-billion dollar per year moneymaking machine. The porn industry generates more income than the MLB, NBA, and NFL combined – impressive. Many people have a hard time talking about porn or admitting that they visit porn sites, yet 40 million adults in the United States alone visit those sites daily. Pornography, as a subject, has been entrenched in controversy for various reasons, however this is not the topic of this article so I will refrain from ranting about what women’s rights groups or the Church’s take is on the issue.

In fact, contrary to the views of these groups, pornography can be seen as actually benefiting women on various levels.

  1. It gives a bird’s eye view of the world’s sexual possibilities.
  2. It can allow women to experience sexual alternatives and please a healthy sexual curiosity.
  3. It provides emotional information that can come only from experiencing something directly or through another.
  4. It allows couples to more easily express their sexual desires in a comfortable manner and generally leads to healthier marriages.

Just as movie and television actresses do, women in the porn industry need representation to start and maintain their careers. There are many agencies that handle this, such as World Modeling, which is the biggest XXX-talent agency in the country. These talent agencies hold talent calls just like in the movie industry where star-hopefuls come to show off their bodies in anticipation of signing with the agency for the future. Agencies handle the actresses’ day to day activities just as a movie agent would. The pay ranges from $500 to a few thousand a scene, depending on the type of scene and the attributes and abilities of the women. Keep in mind, pornography pays on the scene and nothing more. For example, no additional money is made based on how many people view the scene. A 10 percent cut for landing an actress (or actor) in a scene is common, and depending on the type of scene, a more commanding percentage may be expected – such as a hardcore scene.

Does this sound appealing? It may sound even more appealing when you learn that women in the industry make almost three times as much for the same scene as their male counterpart. And if a young actress trying to make it big pushes through to the top, she could be doing a few scenes a week, making top dollar. If you are thinking about becoming an entertainment agent, do not shy away from this niche area in which demand for agents is steady. Porn is nothing to be shy about.

$500 to a few thousand per scene…that’s interesting, I wonder what opportunities are available for endorsement and appearances at special events? Or if the typical contract follows that of a traditional actress?
